Do CMIP6 Climate Models Simulate Global or Regional Compound Events Skillfully?

چکیده
Compound events have the potential to cause high socioeconomic and environmental losses. We examine ability of sixth phase Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) models capture two bivariate compound events: co-occurrence heavy rain strong wind, heat waves meteorological drought. evaluate over North America, Europe, Eurasia, Australia using observations reanalysis data set spanning 1980–2014. Some CMIP6 return periods both Eurasia surprisingly well but perform less Australia. For this poor performance was particularly clear in northern which suggests limits simulating tropical extratropical cyclones, local convection, mesoscale convective systems. did not find higher model resolution improved any region. Overall, our results show some can be used events, Eurasia.

Reliability of regional and global climate models to simulate precipitation extremes over India
Extreme precipitation events over India have resulted in loss of human lives and damaged infrastructures, food crops, and lifelines. The inability of climate models to credibly project precipitation extremes in India has not been helpful to longer-term hazards resilience policy. However, there have been claims that finer-resolution and regional climate models may improve projections. The claims...
متن کاملSelecting global climate models for regional climate change studies.
Regional or local climate change modeling studies currently require starting with a global climate model, then downscaling to the region of interest. How should global models be chosen for such studies, and what effect do such choices have? This question is addressed in the context of a regional climate detection and attribution (D&A) study of January-February-March (JFM) temperature over the w...
متن کاملClimate Change Impact on Precipitation Extreme Events in Uncertainty Situation; Passing from Global Scale to Regional Scale
Global warming and then climate change are important topics studied by researchers throughout the world in the recent decades. In these studies, climatic parameters changes are investigated. Considering large-scaled output of AOGCMs and low precision in computational cells, uncertainty analysis is one of the principles in doing hydrological studies. For this reason, it is tried that investigati...
متن کاملSpatial Distributions of Precipitation Events from Regional Climate Models
The Institute of Mathematics Applied to Geosciences (IMAGe) and the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) has an active research program in the statistical analysis of large numerical simulation of the climate over North America. What is unique about these simulations is their high resolution (50 km) which approaches the scale needed to assess local effects of climate change. The goal...
متن کاملDo cities simulate climate change? A comparison of herbivore response to urban and global warming.
Cities experience elevated temperature, CO2 , and nitrogen deposition decades ahead of the global average, such that biological response to urbanization may predict response to future climate change. This hypothesis remains untested due to a lack of complementary urban and long-term observations. Here, we examine the response of an herbivore, the scale insect Melanaspis tenebricosa, to temperat...
